SEASONING & CARE OF CLAY MUGS

Seasoning unglazed terracotta clay mugs is a process that helps to enhance their durability and improve their functionality. Here's a guide on how to season and clean them:

Seasoning unglazed terracotta clay mugs:

Preparation: Before seasoning, ensure the mugs are clean and free from any dust or debris. Rinse them thoroughly with water and allow them to air dry.

Soaking: To begin the seasoning process, submerge the mugs in water for at least 12 to 24 hours. This allows the porous clay to absorb water, reducing the risk of cracking when exposed to hot liquids later.

Drying: After soaking, remove the mugs from water and let them air dry completely. This might take a few hours to a day, depending on the climate and humidity. The following steps are optional:

Oiling: Once the mugs are dry, rub the interior and exterior surfaces with a food-safe oil, such as ghee or coconut oil. Use a soft cloth or a brush to apply a thin, even layer of oil all over the mugs. The oil helps to create a protective barrier and prevent liquids from seeping into the clay.

Baking: Place the oiled mugs on a baking sheet or oven-safe dish and put them in a cold oven. Turn the oven to a low temperature, around 200-250°F (95-120°C), and bake the mugs for about an hour. Baking will further help the oil to penetrate the clay and form a strong seal.

Cooling: After baking, turn off the oven and allow the mugs to cool down completely inside the oven before removing them. This gradual cooling process helps prevent any sudden temperature changes that could lead to cracking.

Cleaning unglazed terracotta clay mugs:

Hand wash only: Unglazed terracotta clay mugs are not suitable for the dishwasher, as the harsh detergents and high water temperatures can damage the clay and ruin the seasoning.

Use mild soap: When washing, use a mild dish soap and warm water. Avoid abrasive sponges or scouring pads, as they can scratch the clay surface.

Rinse thoroughly: After washing, make sure to rinse the mugs thoroughly to remove any soap residue. The cups are porous and will retain anything that is left to sit inside it.

Air dry: Allow the mugs to air dry completely before storing them. Avoid using a towel to dry them, as the clay can be absorbent and might retain moisture.

Re-seasoning (if necessary): Over time, the seasoning on unglazed terracotta clay mugs may wear off. If you notice the mugs becoming less water-resistant, you can repeat the oiling and baking process to re-season them.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your unglazed terracotta clay mugs stay in good condition and provide you with years of enjoyable use.
